When did the Church begin?
Many people out there have their own opinion as to when the church of our Lord Jesus Christ actually began. But I will rather subject myself to the scriptures than to hearken to the unbiblical views of certain brethren in the faith. Someone might ask, what is the Church? The Greek terminology for, "Church" is "Ekklesia" and it means, " the called out ones". They are the people whom God has called out from the world into Christ Jesus. Whoever is united to God through faith in Christ Jesus is part of the Church or the body of Christ. The church is made up of only believers, those who're born again by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 16; 5).
The Church began on the day of Pentecost
Before Jesus ascended to heaven, he said this to his disciples: And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."-- Luke 24; 49
The disciples were instructed not to leave Jerusalem until they were endued with power from on high to fulfill their ministry. The day of Pentecost was ten days after Jesus had ascended into heaven. The disciples were gathered together in the upper room, they were about one hundred and twenty. And the Holy Spirit descended upon each of them and were filled with the Spirit and they began speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance, see (Acts 2; 1-12).
On that same day, Peter preached the gospel and three thousand souls were saved for the glory of God and were added to the church (Acts 2; 41-42). The people who were saved, were only Jews, but God also had a plan for the gentiles as well. God gave Peter a vision, and the meaning of the vision was that the gospel was not to be limited to the Jews alone, but must extend to the Gentiles as well.
After the vision, Peter was reflecting on it's meaning and the Spirit ministered to him that certain men were sent from Cornelius to fetch him. The next day, he went with them to the house of Cornelius, he and his family were all gentiles, and when he got there, many people were assembled and he preached the gospel to them. Cornelius and his entire household received the message of the gospel and were saved (Acts 10).
God in his grace saved Paul and gave him a commission to reach out to the gentiles with the gospel, and countless gentiles were saved under his ministry. Paul was an apostle specifically to the gentiles: But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel (Acts 9; 15). The church which started with a small number began to grow from strength to strength from the day of Pentecost, up until now. The birthday of the Church was on the day of Pentecost
The gates of Hell shall not prevail against the church
In Acts 8, a great persecution arose against the church. The plan of the authorities who were under the influence of the devil was to wipe away the church and Christianity. But God in his wisdom used the persecution to cause the gospel to spread and many more people were saved and added to the church.
Wicked men will always employ their modus operandi just to come against the church, but all will be to no avail, for Jesus had already prophesied that he would build his church and the gates of hell can never prevail against it. The church is growing stronger and stronger and stronger and no weapon is too powerful to make the church extinct. The church is the body of Christ and no one can sever any member from his body. Every born again christian is a member of the church and we're secure in him. You may kill our body, but our spirit Man is eternally secure in him.
The universal church comprises of born again Christian's from all over around the world, and no gates of hell, no amount of persecution can cause our faith in Christ Jesus to fail. The church will continue to wax more and more stronger and more souls will be added to our numbers, even in the midst of intense persecution.
The church began on the day of Pentecost and will continue to be in existence until the final culmination of all things. God bless you
